Offenses quiet in Clarkson-RPI Doubleheader split

Potsdam, NY - Four pitchers combined to allow just four runs over the course of Saturday's doubleheader between the Clarkson University Baseball team and Rensselaer, as Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY) outdueled Mike Campisi for a 1-0 extra-inning victory in the opener while Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) came up short in a 3-0 loss to Sean Conroy at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-18 overall this season and 8-12 in the Liberty League, while Rensselaer pushed its mark to 22-9 overall and 14-6 in conference games.

Chudy became the first pitcher this season to hold the RPI offense without a run, tossing eight scoreless innings for his fourth victory of the season. That fact almost wasn't the case in the early going, as the first two Engineers' hitters singled to open the game. Chudy then struck out the number three hitter in the Rensselaer lineup before allowing a walk to load the bases, but followed that up with another strikeout and a fielder's choice to end the frame. Chudy would allow only five more base runners until the eighth inning, one of which was erased following a wild pitch, to hold off the RPI offense.

Campisi was just as formidable for Rensselaer, allowing only two hits until the eighth inning. In the bottom half of that frame, however, Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY) hit a one-out single before being erased on a fielder's choice by Tim Beninati (Schoharie, NY). With two outs, Beninati executed a delayed steal to get into scoring position and on the next pitch, Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) singled to left to bring home the only run of the game for a walk-off victory.

The second game was more of the same as the teams' offenses were quiet in the early going. It wasn't until the fifth inning that RPI managed a run, and that one was unearned. With two outs, Tim LeSuer singled and Jonny Rio drew a four-pitch walk to bring Chuck Erickson to the plate. Erickson hit a high fly ball to shallow left field, but the ball nicked off Kyle Henchey's (Rensselaer, NY) glove to allow LeSeur to score from second base. Fortunately that would not be the only run that the Engineers would score, as RPI plated a pair in the seventh. Mattingly hit a pair of batters to start the top of the seventh inning and LeSuer reached base on a bunt single to load the bases. Rio then delivered a two-run single past the drawn-in infield. It appeared as if the Engineers would score another run on a sacrifice fly, but LeSuer was called out on an appeal to bring the score back to 3-0.

Clarkson had a chance to tie the game up in the bottom half of the seventh. Beninati erased pinch-runner Justin Rebhun (East Greenbush, NY) on a fielder's choice which appeared to be a hit to the outfield. With two outs, Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) and Henchey produced back-to-back hits to load the bases up, but Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY) flew out to end the game.

Conroy finished with a complete-game victory, allowing only three hits and a walk in seven innings while striking out five. Mattingly also had a complete game, giving up eight hits in seven innings and striking out four.
