Novice 8+ shines as Saints men's crew team competes in Tampa Mayor’s Cup

The St. Lawrence University men's crew team opened up the spring racing season at the Tampa Mayor's Cup on March 17th during its annual training trip to Florida. Highlighting the week was a top finish by the Novice 8+.

The Novice 8+ finished the short 1,500 meter course in 4:59.90, beating out Colgate, who posted a time of 5:02.61. Florida State, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, University of South Florida, Hamilton College and the University of Tampa also competed in the event. Gordon Clarke stroked and Mitchell Joseph was the coxswain, while Kyle Benzing, Ted Marr, Matt Farina, George Alberts, Drew Twitchell, Mason Vogt and Tom Joyce also helped power the Saints.

The Novice 4+ came in first in their heat with a time of 5:45.80, while Hamilton came in second at 5:47.42. The Saints placed fifth in the final with a time of 5:47.03. In the Varsity 8+ event, the young Saints negotiated the course in 4:59.23, good for third place, while the Varsity 4+ placed seventh in its event with a time of 5:40.81.

The Saints will compete against RIT on March 31st in Rochester, NY.
