Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's ice hockey team's offense struggled as visiting University of New England closed out the weekend set with a 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Nor'easters struck first on a delayed penalty call as Emily Corrales controlled a puck out in front of net and beat Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, NY) from right in front of net high over the glove side to make it 1-0 at the 5:51 mark of the opening period.
At the 16:57 mark of the period Shannon Reynolds made it 2-0 in favor of UNE on her first score of the season on a backhanded shot. Lilly Henjes and Gabby Crugnale were credited with assists on the play as the Nor'easters led 2-0 after one.
Both teams skated to a scoreless second period but two UNE goals from Haley Gorman and Abby Kinens in the first half of the third frame gave the Nor'easters a 4-0 victory.
Kieffer stopped six shots in the first period, while Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, ON) turned aside 28 shots over the final two frames in relief. Courtney Kendall made 22 saves in the victory for UNE.
Tia Mitchell (Akwesasne, NY) led SUNY Canton with four shots on goal, while Grace Lyon (Brasher Falls, NY), Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) and Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) each challenged Kendall three times.
The women's hockey team returns to the ice Friday when they host St. Michael's College at 5:00 p.m. in the Roos House.
