OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-7, 1-5 SUNYAC) stayed even with No. 8/9 Oswego State (6-2, 4-2) for two periods, but the Lakers scored three times in the third for a 5-2 victory. Sophomore forward Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt Broncos) and junior forward Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) each scored for the Bears.

The first period featured even play between the two teams. The Lakers jumped out in front at the 11:36 mark on a goal from Michael Gillespie. They held the lead until their first penalty kill with less than three minutes to go in the period. At 17:40, Horn evened the score with assists from junior assistant captain Vincent Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers) and senior captain Mike Sweeney (Pittsburgh, Pa./PAL Islanders). Senior assistant captain Nate Skidmore (Syracuse N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) made six saves in the period for the Bears.

Special teams played an important part in the second period as well. Josh Zizek gave Oswego the lead back with another power-play goal at 1:38. Potsdam countered on its second man advantage at 5:47. Young made it 2-2 with helpers from freshman forward Jack Bloem (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Connecticut Rangers) and sophomore defenseman Jon Venter (Guilford, Conn./Syracuse Stars). The Lakers outshot Potsdam 11-5 in the middle period, but the score remained even after 40 minutes.

Oswego went on its third power play 3:47 into the third period. After good puck movement, Zizek scored from the left side of the net at 4:21. The Bears created good pressure with consecutive power plays, but were unable to draw even. After killing the penalties, the Lakers struck again, getting a goal from Max Novick at 11:36. Zizek then completed his hat trick at 13:33, wristing a shot just inside the left post to close the scoring.

Skidmore finished with 26 saves, while Laker goalie Cedric Hansen made 17 stops for the win.

Oswego outshot the Bears 31-19 and both teams were 2-for-4 on the power play.

Potsdam looks to bounce back tomorrow night when the Bears head to SUNY Cortland for a 7 p.m. contest.
