Elmira, N.Y.—For the second straight day sixth-ranked Elmira College (12-4-1, 8-1-1 (ECAC West) used a big second period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (5-9-1, 1-8). The Soaring Eagles scored four second period goals en route to a 5-0 victory.

Elmira was very aggressive out of the gate firing 21 shots on Potsdam freshman goaltender Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) in the first period. Salvarinas held off the Soaring Eagles until Madison Johnston scored a power-play goal at the 16:42 mark. Facing intense pressure, the Bears struggled to get their offense moving and trailed 1-0 after the first 20 minutes.

Elmira didn’t ease up in the second period and added four more goals. Lindsey Mitchell struck just 1:25 into the period and Lauren Campbell recorded a short-handed goal at 5:33. Amanda Ritzel struck seven minutes later and Mary-Kate Gellerman closed all scoring at 14:29, extending the lead to 5-0. At the start of the third period sophomore goaltender Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) replaced Salvarinas in goal and kept the Soaring Eagles off the board for the remainder of the contest.

Salvarinas made 34 saves in the first 40 minutes and Conophy stopped 15 shots in the third period. Laura Proietto made 13 saves to record the shutout for Elmira.

Bears Head Coach Jay Green saw the positives after the finish of a tough weekend against a top opponent.

“Despite the outcome we worked hard the entire game and never quit,” said Green. “They took a lot of shots today, but I was pleased that we forced most of them out from the perimeter and not in close.”

Green was impressed by the play of two of his freshmen.

“Dawna Salvarinas was strong in goal again and Emma Fillman (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) played the two best games of her career on defense so far.”

Potsdam hosts Cortland for two ECAC West games on Jan. 22-23. The Bears face off with the Red Dragons at 3 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
