The fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team attempted a late fourth quarter rally, but ultimately fell to No. 8 SUNY Cortland in the third round of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament 20-10 Saturday afternoon at North Country Field in Canton, New York.

St. Lawrence advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season after advancing to the semifinals last season. The Saints were led by Conor Healey, who scored three goals and added two assists for five points. Healey ended his four-year career with 291 points and will graduate as the all-time leading point scorer in program history. Jon Fairbanks and Jamie DeNicola both scored two goals and added an assist, while Jordan Dow tallied two goals. Connor Brimley also added a goal for the Saints. DeNicola led the team with five ground balls, while Alec Dietsch and Caleb Kane both caused three turnovers.

SUNY Cortland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Healey picked up his 35th goal of the season and the Saints lone goal of the quarter, as the Red Dragons led 4-1 at the end of one.

The Saints closed the gap to one with three straight goals in the second quarter. Fairbanks picked up a rebound shot after a shot by Healey, to bring the game within three. Brimley and Fairbanks each scored from the top of the arc to bring the Saints within one, 5-4. The Red Dragons scored four-unanswered goals to increase their lead to five, holding a 9-5 just over 40 seconds into the third quarter.

Dow scored his 36th goal of the season off a pass from Fairbanks with 4:17 to play in the third, but the Red Dragons put the game out of reach with seven straight goals for an 11-goal lead with just under 13 minutes to play.

"Nothing came easy to us today," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "A lot of that is Cortland has a really tough defense; they've got a lot of athletes and they're well coached. But we never really got into rhythm today on the offensive end. (Cortland is) 17-2 for a reason. When you play a team like that, you've got to be on your A game, and unfortunately, that wasn't the case today."

Today's loss marks the end of a four-year career for 18 seniors, including captains Healey, Kane, Dietsch and Brett McCormack. "Conor's a special guy. Maybe he's a once in a coaching career type of guy as far as his ability to break down a defense," said Mahoney. "Obviously we'll miss him and this large senior class a great deal."

The Saints ended their season 16-3 overall, while the Red Dragons will play RIT in the NCAA quarterfinals on Wednesday.
