POTSDAM, N.Y.—For the second day in a row, the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (2-6-1, 2-6-1 ECAC West) grabbed an early lead against No. 4 Elmira College (8-1-1, 6-0) before falling 5-1. Senior forward Lindsay Mitchell and freshman forward Erin Weston each scored twice for the Soaring Eagles.

Elmira controlled the play territorially for much of the first period. The Soaring Eagles fired 18 shots on Potsdam sophomore goaltender Dawna Salvarinas, but came up empty. The Bears had much fewer chances, but made the most of them. At 12:32 mark, sophomore assistant captain Brittany Lucky wristed a shot from the right point over the right shoulder of Elmira junior goalie Samantha Maguire to give Potsdam a 1-0 lead.

The Soaring Eagles took control of the game in the second period. At 3:13 on the power play, sophomore defender Katie Gaskin beat a screened Salvarinas on a shot from the point to tie the score at 1-1. Just over a minute later, Weston batted home a rebound to give the Soaring Eagles the lead for good. At the 11:57 mark, Mitchell carried the puck the length of the ice and connected with a backhand shot. Mitchell struck again four minutes later, scoring after a loose puck scramble in front of Potsdam’s goal. Elmira took the 4-1 advantage into the second intermission.

The Soaring Eagles continued to pressure the Bears’ defense in the third period, but Potsdam was able to limit their scoring chances. Weston tipped a shot from the point to notch her second of the contest at the 7:36 mark and cap the scoring. The Bears had a few chances late, but couldn’t solve Maguire again.

Maguire made 20 saves for the victory and Salvarinas stopped 48 shots. Potsdam was 0-3 on the power play and Elmira finished 1-6.

“I was much happier with today’s three-period effort,” said Bears Head Coach Jay Green. “We cut down on the foolish penalties. We came out and played hard in the third period and finished strong. We couldn’t ask much more from Dawna Salvarinas today and Brittany Lucky was one of our best players on the ice.”

Potsdam will complete the 2011 portion of its schedule with two games at St. Michael’s on Dec. 9-10. The Bears face the Purple Knights at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
