ELMIRA, N.Y.—Fourth-ranked Elmira College (16-4-4, 13-2-2 ECAC West) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (12-11-1, 8-8-1) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Amanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers) scored for the Bears and freshman goaltender Alexa Pfeiffer (Sylvania, Ohio/Little Caesar's) finished with 34 saves.

The Soaring Eagles stifled Potsdam's offense in the first period, while firing 14 shots on goal. However, Pfeiffer kept the contest scoreless heading into the first intermission. Potsdam killed off one power play during the period.

Elmira began the second period with 1:17 remaining on their second power play. The Bears managed to kill off the penalty and battled evenly with the Soaring Eagles for much of the period. Elmira outshot the Bears just 12-11, but managed to get on the board. At the 11:04 mark, Katie Granato finally solved Pfeiffer to make it 1-0. Shannon Strawinski gave the Eagles a two-goal advantage at 17:36.

Just 2:49 into the final period, Johanna Eidensten struck on the power play to make it 3-0. Midway through the third, Peterson beat Soaring Eagles goalie Kelcey Crawford to get Potsdam on the board with a power-play marker. Senior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and senior defenseman Madison Smith (Edmonton, Alberta/College of St. Scholastica) recorded the assists. The Bears outshot Elmira 12-11 in the last 20 minutes, but couldn't get any closer.

Crawford stopped 23 shots to earn the victory. Potsdam was 1-for-2 on the power play and the Soaring Eagles were 1-for-3.

As with today's contest, tomorrow's game will also be played at the First Arena in downtown Elmira at 4 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Complex.
