POTSDAM, N.Y.—No. 23 SUNY Geneseo (13-3, 6-2 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-12, 1-7) 21-9 on Saturday afternoon's season finale. Junior midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) matched a career-high with five goals to go along with two assists to lead the Bears. Senior captain Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) closed her four years at Potsdam with a goal and two assists.
The Bears scored three of the contest's first five goals for a 3-2 advantage at the 21:11 mark. Sophomore attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) buried a pass from O'Connor at 26:35 to tie the game at one. O'Connor then scored two in a row at 25:21 and 21:11 to give Potsdam its lone lead of the day. Huntley assisted on the second marker. Geneseo closed the half with a 14-2 run for a 16-5 advantage at the break. O'Connor set up a rocket from sophomore midfielder Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) at 15:47 and netted her third of the day at 10:15.
The Knights outscored Potsdam 5-4 in the final 30 minutes. Huntley struck at 28:53. O'Connor and sophomore attack Ashley Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) scored in succession at 11:57 and 9:42 and O'Connor scored her fifth with 3:12 left.
In goal, Bears sophomore Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) made nine saves and Geneseo junior Tess McFadden (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) stopped three shots.
Senior midfielder Erin Cregan (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) led the Knights with five goals and an assist. Senior attack Hannah Millich (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) had two goals and three assists for five points and freshman attack Hannah Marafioti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) recorded four goals.
The contest brings to a close the careers of seniors Huntley, captain Morgan Cook (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Danielle Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart). Huntley finishes her time as a Bear with 73 points on 27 goals and 46 assists. She ranks fourth in program history in assists.
