Facing the 20th ranked women's lacrosse team in Oneonta State, the Bears went into halftime with the lead, fell behind and then saw their late flurry of goals come up just a tad short in an inspiring 11-10 loss at home to the Red Dragons in a SUNYAC contest on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

The Bears (3-6, 0-3 SUNYAC) have fought close in games all season with four of its six losses coming by just a single goal.

Junior attacker Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y . / Williamsville East) enjoyed a new single-season personal best when she pumped in four goals to give her 36 points on the season. Weigel surpassed last year's previous best of 33 points in a season.

Trailing 6-5 entering the second half, the Red Dragons came out with renewed energy. That ended up being the difference as Oneonta put in five unanswered goals and six of the next seven goals that were scored.

Kiera McNally, Oneonta's leading scorer, knotted the score at 6-6 with her 31st of the season just 1:01 into the second half. Junior Nicole Boylan dodged around a Bears' defender and reclaimed the lead for Oneonta at 26:49. Clark scored unassisted on a free position shot to give the Red Dragons a two-goal cushion.

After those three quick goals by Oneonta, Bears freshman goalie Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y . / Canandaigua) relieved senior Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y. / Eastridge) early in the second half. Boylan and Fioretti scored to make it 10-6 with 17:47 left forcing a Potsdam timeout.

The first goal of the second half for the Bears came from freshman midfielder Alyssa Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y . / Williamsville South).

Clark scored her fourth goal of the afternoon to push it to a four-goal advantage.

McClusky got on the board to make it 11-8 with 2:20 left and freshman Michaela Cole cut it to 11-9 with 1:47. Weigel charged from the clearing line with the ball and found the back of the net to make it 11-10 with 3.4 seconds remaining.

The Bears were primed to compete as it took the lead from the start when junior defender Emily Petit (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury) made good on a free position shot with 27:41 remaining in the first half. Petit finished with a solid all-around game with two goals, seven groundballs and four draw controls.

Red Dragons senior midfielder Casey Sarle answered with a free position shot of her own just 52 seconds later. Sophomore Catherine Clark gave Oneonta its first lead at 20:53.

Potsdam reclaimed the lead on goals by Weigel and Petit. Weigel added to the lead by making it 4-2.

Sarle converted a free position shot and Clark put in another marker to even the score at four with 12:28 left.

Senior attacker Michelle Varney (Canton, N.Y. / Hugh C. Williams) struck back to give Potsdam a 5-4 lead on a feed from sophomore Lizzie Marchbanks (Liverpool, N.Y . / Liverpool).

Nikki Fioretti scored on an assist from Clark to even the score at five.

The Bears forced a key turnover in the waning seconds of the first half to head into halftime with a 6-5 lead when Weigel scored on an assist from Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y. / IHC).

Potsdam will get right back to action on Wednesday when the Bears will travel to Morrisville State to take on the Mustangs for a nonconference game at 1 p.m. The game was rescheduled due to a snowstorm earlier in the season. Potsdam will return home on Saturday to take on No. 9 Geneseo at 3 p.m.
