A pair of hat tricks by the University of Minnesota powered the No. 2 Gophers to a 10-0 win over St. Lawrence on Sunday in Minneapolis. With the loss, the Saints drop to 9-7-2 on the season, while Minnesota improves to 17-1-2.
Minnesota wasted little time getting on the board; scoring its first goal of the game just 1:20 into the first period. The Gophers tallied three in the first, three in the second and added four in the third to push to the eventual 10-0 margin. Both Rachael Bona and Kelly Pannek record hat tricks for Minnesota.
The Saints were outshot 40-15, with a third of their shots coming from junior forward Jenna Marks. Marks had a breakaway opportunity in the second, but her shot rang off the post.
First-year netminder Brooke Wolejko started the game for St. Lawrence and made 24 saves through two periods before being relieved by junior Giulia Mazzocchi, who made her first appearance of the season. Mazzocchi stopped six shots in 20 minutes played.
The Saints have Monday off before they return to Ridder Arena on Tuesday evening for a rematch with the Gophers.
