First-year students Tapshak Augustine and Brendan McNamee combined for the game-winning goal on Wednesday afternoon as the No. 19 St. Lawrence men's soccer team (6-1-2) handed Plattsburgh State (8-1) its first loss of the season, 1-0.

St. Lawrence controlled the play in the first half and had a pair of scoring chances back-to-back in the 33rd minute when a header by Praveen Balakumaran was saved off the post and resulted in a corner kick. On the ensuing play, senior center back Harry Copeland headed a ball behind the Platsburgh goalkeeper but Cardinals defender Nelson Vetter was there to make a defensive save and keep the game scoreless.

The Saints finally broke through in the 78th minute when McNamee sent a cross to the far side of the box where Augustine controlled the ball and made a quick move to his left before firing a low shot past the diving Plattsburgh goalkeeper, Mitchell Jordon for his fourth goal of the season. The assist is the first of McNamee's collegiate career.

St. Lawrence finished with a 16-5 edge in total shots and did not allow a single shot on goal in the contest. Though senior goalkeeper Ryan Roethel was untested, he was still aggressive in the box for the Saints; regularly coming off his line to intercept cross attempts by the Cardinals. The Monroe, N.Y. native has played every minute in goal for St. Lawrence and increased his season shutout total to seven on Wednesday.

The match with the Cardinals was the final nonconference contest of the season for the Saints, as they'll open Liberty League play at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 against RIT on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
