No. 19 Saints men's lacrosse advances to conference semifinals with win over Union

Junior Conor Caffrey netted three goals and added two assists for five points to lead the No. 19 and fourth-seeded St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 14-6 win over the fifth-seeded Union Dutchmen in a first-round Liberty League game Saturday afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium to advance to the conference semifinals on Wednesday, May 2nd.

Second to Caffrey, Mike Donnelly and Kyle Gagne recorded two goals and one assist, while Jordan Dow tallied one goal and two assists and Nick Brindisi recorded one of each. Steven Peterson, Jack Suominen, Brian Cunningham, Cal Hynson and Harrison Koch all tallied one goal each for the Saints. Sam Sweeney picked up a team-high four ground balls, while Tyler Burns caused four turnovers for the Scarlet and Brown.

St. Lawrence blanked the Dutchmen through the first 21 minutes of play scoring eight unanswered goals and taking an 8-0 lead with eight minutes to play in the second quarter.

Caffrey netted his 42nd goal of the season to kick off scoring for the Saints and was followed by Donnelly off the pass from Hennessey with 10:29 play.

Gagne tallied a man-up goal off the pass from Donnelly with a rip from outside the arc. Brindisi and Donnelly posted the next two goals with assists from Caffrey to improve the Saints' lead to 5-0.

Peterson ended the first frame, putting St. Lawrence up 6-0, with his 11th goal of the season.

Koch and Dow put up the Saints first two goals in the second quarter before Charlie McGovern struck with Union's first goal of the game with 3:25 to play until halftime. Caffrey extended the Saints lead to 9-1 just before the break and posted his third goal of the game to open up the second half.

Jack Kaufman added Union's second goal off the feed from Kieran McGovern. Both team's then traded goals before Charlie McGovern netted added his second of the game and Keaton McCann posted back-to-back goals on a 3-0 run for Union in the fourth quarter.

Cunningham and Gagne netted two more goals for the Scarlet and Brown to end the game.

"We had great energy and commitment from every player today," said head coach Mike Mahoney '93. "We're excited to be practicing on Monday."

Charlie McGovern and McCann led the Dutchmen with two goals each, while John Edmonds and Kaufman each tallied one. Alex Newhouse picked up seven ground balls and went 13-for-21 in the faceoff circle for Union.

Saints' goalkeeper Matty Corbelle improved to 3-0 on the season and made seven saves in goal, while Sam Bebout made seven saves and Jack Santilli recorded four in goal for Union.

The Scarlet and Brown held a 41-27 shot advantage, including a 25-13 shot on goal edge. The Saints also picked up 25 ground balls to Union's 21, but the Dutchmen held a 15-9 faceoff advantage.
