POTSDAM, N.Y.—15th-ranked SUNY Cortland (8-3, 3-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-8, 0-4) 16-2 on a rainy afternoon. Senior captain Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) scored twice for the Bears and sophomore goalie Katie Longamore made 10 saves. Senior attack Kristin Ohberg (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led the Red Dragons with one goal and four assists.
Cortland built an 11-0 lead in the first half. Senior attack Makenzie Annable (Naverino, N.Y./Onondaga) scored three times and added an assist during the run and freshman attack Molly Newton (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) netted another three goals.
Newton, Ohberg and Annable scored as part of a 4-0 stretch for Cortland to open the second half. At 7:38, senior captain Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) set up Murphy to get the Bears on the board. Two minutes later, sophomore midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) connected with Newman for her second marker. Cortland tacked on a final goal with 1:48 remaining, to close the scoring at 16-2.
Bears sophomore goalie Tatum Walber (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) made one save and allowed one goal in the final 5:13 for her Potsdam lacrosse debut. Cortland senior Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) stopped all six shots that came her way in the first 47:37. Junior Kristyn Drake (Tully, N.Y./Tully) allowed two goals and made a save in the last 12:23.
O'Connor recorded two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls on the day.
Potsdam hosts Route 11 rival SUNY Canton at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.
