The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team, ranked No. 13 in the national polls, trailed Vassar College 1-0 late in regulation on Saturday in Canton, NY. However, Rob Brandell's header in the 81st minute pulled the Saints even, and despite numerous chances in overtime, the home team settled for a 1-1 tie with their Liberty League foe at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Saints (12-2-1, 5-0-1) finished with a 23-6 advantage in attempted shots including 8-2 in overtime. Vassar (9-4-2, 3-1-1) got a solid seven-save performance from goaltender Adam Warner, including crucial stops in the extra session.

Despite playing defensively for most of the game, Vassar did find itself with a 1-0 lead thanks to a counter strike from Alex Gonzales at 27:10. The Brewers rushed the ball up the field as the Saints did not apply pressure, and Ben Glasner fed a perfect cross to Gonzales who settled the ball and fired a strike into the lower corner past St. Lawrence keeper Sean Houston for his first goal of the season.

Playing from behind, St. Lawrence had nearly every offensive chance, firing crosses through the box but was unable to connect for a true scoring bid, while Vassar's defense did well to keep Warner protected. Playing direct as the clock wound down, Dan Hunt collected the ball and attacked from the left. His cross was perfectly-set for Brandell, who headed the ball past Warner into the lower-right portion of the net for the equalizer with just 9:23 to play in regulation.

St. Lawrence carried its momentum into overtime, as they nearly ended it in the first 10:00 minute session on a flurry of action in front of Warner. However, the Vassar keeper made a big save on Noah Bunton, and though St. Lawrence wanted a foul in the box on the rebound, no call was made sending the teams into double overtime.

The Saints, which had two goals called back in regulation on an offside call and on a foul, again nearly earned the victory as Brandell's shot was stopped by Warner but the rebound came to Chandler Short. Unfortunately, his bid for the win hit the crossbar and stayed out, allowing the Brewers to escape with a point thanks to the 1-1 tie.

St. Lawrence finished with a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, while Houston and Aaron Costello each finished with one save in the game. Costello replaced Houston with 14:36 remaining as the Saints looked to play more direct.

The Saints will look to extend their currently 10-game unbeaten streak next Saturday, October 25 in Saratoga Springs, NY when they visit Skidmore College at 3:00pm.
