The nationally-ranked No. 13 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team overwhelmed Bard College on Friday afternoon, outshooting the Raptors by a 28-3 margin en route to a 2-0 victory at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Junior Harry Copeland scored his seventh goal of the season a mere 4:40 into the first half, as St. Lawrence improved to 12-2-0 (5-0-0) and owns sole possession of first place in the Liberty League after Clarkson knocked off Vassar, 2-1. Meanwhile, Bard falls to 4-10-0 (0-5-0) despite a nine-save performance from goalkeeper Daniel Gagne.

"Those are the games you have to win at home, and we met our goals by scoring twice and keeping a clean sheet," said St. Lawrence head coach Bob Durocher. "Most importantly, we were able to play some of our younger guys and give them valuable minutes while resting several of our veterans."

Copeland scored the opening goal on a beautiful cross from captain Mark Provost, as the Dedham, MA native headed the ball from just outside of the 6-yard box into the upper-left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

St. Lawrence's defense shut down Bard, as starting keeper Sean Houston was not forced to making a save in the opening 45:00 minutes. The Saints picked up an insurance goal off an unfortunate bounce for Bard's Austin Higgins, who scored an own-goal trying to defend a cross from Noah Bunton. The own goal put St. Lawrence ahead 2-0 at 42:03 of the first half.

The Saints had consistent pressure throughout the second half, owning nearly all of the possession while subbing in numerous young players. Bard did have one scoring chance, but keeper Aaron Costello, who relieved Houston in the second half, made two saves to keep the shutout intact.

"It's great to see Harry maturing as a player, as he's doing a great job holding our defense together and leading the league in goals," added Coach Durocher. "What more can you ask of a center back?"

St. Lawrence will host Vassar College tomorrow, Saturday, October 18 in a pivotal meeting with playoff implications. The Saints and Brewers will get underway at 2:00pm.
