No. 1 Cortland downs Bears women's lax, McCabe reaches milestones

CORTLAND, N.Y.—Top-ranked SUNY Cortland (10-0, 2-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-4. 1-1) 21-7 on Tuesday afternoon. Junior midfielder Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) led the Bears with a goal and two assists, while senior midfielder Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y/West Genesee) and from junior midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) each scored two goals. McCabe also totaled four ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover, placing her eighth (104), eighth (69) and ninth (41) in the respective categories in program history.

The Red Dragon's opened the contest with a 3-0 burst, but goals from Cole and McCabe got Potsdam within 4-2 a the the 19:16 mark. Cortland steadily built up its lead over the next nine minutes, but the Bears scored three goals in 41 seconds to make it an 11-5 contest. McCabe notched her second of the game at 6:05 with an assist from sophomore attack Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams). Senior midfielder Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) set up Cole's second tally 15 seconds later. At 5:24, Newman buried her 30th goal of the season to cap the run. With 10 seconds remaining in the half, McClusky scored an unassisted goal and Potsdam trailed 14-6 at the break.

The Red Dragons scored the first six goals of the second half before junior attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) ended the run with a helper from Newman. Cortland tacked on a final goal with 12 seconds to play to finish the 21-7 win.

In goal, junior Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) made 10 saves in the first 51:50. Freshman Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) stopped one shot in the final 8:10. Jaclyn Beshlian earned the win after allowing six goals and recording a save in the first 36:30 for Cortland. Victoria Fusco stopped all three shots she faced in the next 13:56. Liz Ingalls made one save and allowed a goal in the last 9:34.

The Bears are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Morrisville State to face the Mustangs at 6 p.m.
