NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (10-2-1, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) scored goals in the 81st and 83rd minutes to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-11, 0-5) 2-0 this afternoon. Freshman goalie Jaime Durant made 12 saves for the Bears.
The Hawks controlled the play from the outset, but Potsdam's defense and Durant put in another strong performance. Durant turned aside eight first half shots to keep the Bears even at the break. New Paltz held 12-3 and 4-0 advantages in shots and corner kicks at halftime.
The Hawks were able to raise their offensive play another notch in the second half, but still struggled to crack Potsdam's defense. Finally at 80:39, New Paltz's Gabby Martino broke the tie with a blast from 25 yards out. Shelby Kondelka assisted on the goal. Less than two minutes later, Kondelka added an insurance marker with a shot from 20 yards out on an assist from Shaun O'Hanlon.
New Paltz goalie Stephanie Vega made one save to earn the victory. The Hawks outshot the Bears 29-6.
Potsdam returns home next weekend to host Buffalo State and Fredonia. The Bears face the Bengals at 4 p.m. on Friday and the Blue Devils at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
