NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (8-5-2, 2-2-2 SUNYAC) scored an early first half goal and made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (5-7-1, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon. Junior goalie Emily Lapage (Brushton, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) made six saves in another solid performance for the Bears.

The Hawks tilted the field in their favor in the first half, but scoring chances were hard to come by for both teams. New Paltz finally got on the board in the 17th minute. At 16:18 Eleni Anselmi ripped a shot from the left top of the box to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Chelsea Weir recorded the assist on the play. Potsdam and New Paltz traded shots over the remainder of the period, but the score remained unchanged into the half.

In the final 45 minutes, the Bears turned up the pressure, outshooting the Hawks 11-9. Freshman striker Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) and junior forward Erin McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) had strong scoring chances, but couldn't solve New Paltz goalkeeper Katelyn Cordero. Sophomore midfielder Kaylen Van Wagner (Red Hook, N.Y./Hotchkiss) had a final opportunity for Potsdam with 1:28 remaining, but the shot sailed just high.

Cordero finished with four saves to earn the shutout. The Hawks edged the Bears 19-16 in shots, but Potsdam finished with a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bears return home next weekend for SUNYAC contests with Buffalo State on Friday at 3 p.m. and Fredonia at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Potsdam will honor its seniors prior to Saturday's game against the Blue Devils.
