POTSDAM, N.Y.- Daniel Morello scored two goals in 11 seconds as Morrisville State (3-13-1, 2-6-1 SUNYAC) defeat Potsdam 5-3. The Mustangs erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to earn the hard fought victory.

The first period was a stalemate with Morrisville holding a slight 13-12 advantage in shots. The Bears (6-9-2, 4-5 SUNYAC) came closer to scoring with under two minutes remaining in the first period; sophomore Adam Place ripped a shot at the Mustangs goalie. Sophomore Christopher Azzano got a piece of the shot but it trickled passed him and then ricocheted off the post, keeping the game tied. Both goalies put forth solid efforts and the teams went into intermission scoreless.

The Bears broke through at 9:45 of the second period. Junior Bill Tsekos redirected a shot from the point past the goalie to give Potsdam the early advantage. Less than five minutes later, Place scored a power-play goal. The score was assisted by senior Sy Nutkevitch and freshman Erick Ware (Huntsville, Ala./Kenai River Brown Bears). The teams would then score three goals in the next 45 seconds of the period. Morello’s first goal came on the power-play at 18:49 and he would answer 11 seconds later as the Mustangs came storming back to tie the score at 2. The Bears would answer 34 seconds later off the stick of freshman Dan McCamey assisted by Kenny Simon and Matt Viola.

The Mustangs played a very strong third period beginning with a goal at the 11:45 mark. Todd Hosmer scored to tie the game at three. The Mustangs would seize the momentum and score two more goals to put the game away.

For the game, freshman goalie Dylan Ellis recorded 36 saves on 41 Mustang shots. Azzano had 33 saves on 36 shots. Potsdam finished the game 1-of-3 on the power-play while Morrisville St. capitalized on 2-of-4 power-play opportunities.

The Bears don’t have much time to think about the loss as they return to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. as they travel to Hobart.
