Mundy nets first career goal in road tilt for Roos' women's hockey at Oswego

Oswego, NY – Caroline Mundy (Kittanning, PA) tallied her first career goal to get the Roos within one but it wasn't enough as visiting SUNY Canton fell, 3-1, to host Oswego State Friday afternoon at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The win improves the Lakers to 7-2-1, while the Kangaroos even their record at 4-4-2.

The hosts owned a 14-3 shots on goal edge in the opening period and despite a strong Roo penalty kill unit the Lakers finally converted with just over two minutes remaining in the period when Erika Truschke won a faceoff in the Roo defensive zone. Ashley Lyman quickly picked up the puck and beat SUNY Canton net minder Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) top shelf into the left corner to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead after one. Dominique was impressive between the pipes making 13 first period saves.

The Lakers opened up a 2-0 lead at the 7:57 mark of the second period when Bridget Hamlin scored on a scramble out in front as she beat Dominique who was sprawled out in front of goal. Leslie Jarvis and Maddy Paul earned assists on the power play marker.

The Roos got on the board at the 17:57 mark of the period when Mundy lit the lamp for the first time as a Roo. She collected the puck in the slot and beat Laker goaltender Catherine Cote. Tia Mitchell (Akwesasne, NY) and Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, NY) earned assists on the play. With just 50 seconds remaining in the second frame Melissa Seamont found the back of the net off passes from Jocelyn St. Clair and Monica Patten to make it 3-1 Oswego State after two.

SUNY Canton struggled to stay out of the box in the third period committing five penalties but the penalty kill unit went 5-for-5 as neither team found the back of the net in the final frame. The Lakers went 1-for-8 on the power play in the game, while the Roos were 0-for-3 with the skater advantage. Olga Russell (Rome, NY) and Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) paced the Roos with three shots on goal apiece.

Dominique turned aside 32 shots for SUNY Canton, while Cote made 11 saves for the hosts. The two teams will have a rematch Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.
