St. Lawrence University's men's hockey team got another strong effort from sophomore goaltender Matt Weninger, but had to settle for a split of its weekend series with 18th-ranked Michigan Tech as the Huskies scored three times in the second period en route a 3-1 win at Appleton Arena Saturday afternoon.

Sophomores Ryan Furne and Milos Gordic scored goals 54 seconds apart early in the second period and senior goaltender Josh Robinson came through with 25 saves to power the Tech split.

The Huskies, ranked 18th nationally, improve to 8-5-1 with their second road win of the season. Michigan Tech split in Anchorage, AK last weekend before making the cross-country trek to Canton. The Saints are 5-7-0 heading into a stretch of three league games in a five day span, beginning with a game at Cornell on Friday night

All of the scoring in Saturday's game was packed into the second period as both Robinson and Saint sophomore goalie Matt Weninger made some big saves in the first 20 minutes to keep the game scoreless.

"I thought both teams generated some quality chances in the first period and each goaltender made some critical saves to keep it scoreless," said Saint associate head coach Mike Hurlbut. "We had a couple of lapses defensively in the second period and didn't give Wenny the help he needed and they were able to jump on top.

"Those were two good games against a quality opponent, and while we certainly would have liked to have swept the series, we can take a lot out of the weekend."

Furne opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the year and second power play goal of the year as he was left alone in front of Weninger and put away a shot at 4:52 to give the Huskies the lead. Michigan Tech then regained the puck following the faceoff and stormed back into the Saint end with Gordic scoring his sixth of the year with a shot just inside the post.

The Saints cut the Michigan Tech lead to 2-1 at 13:37 of the period when junior defenseman Jordan Dewey beat Robinson with a blast to the far post from the top of the left faceoff circle on a power play, scoring his second goal of the year, but Tanner Kero re-established the Huskies' two-goal lead when he picked up his own rebound in front of Weninger and roofed it for his sixth of the season at 17:36.

Neither team scored in the third period as Michigan Tech turned in an outstanding defensive effort to bottle up the Saint attack. SLU pulled Weninger for an extra attacker with 1:48 to play, but could not get any closer than 3-1.

Weninger finished with 22 saves for the Saints, who had a slight 26-25 edge in shots, 11 of those coming on six power play opportunities.
