(Canton, N.Y.)- The last time SUNY Canton and the University of Buffalo met all the scoring was done in the final period and it was mostly true again on Friday as the Bulls scored three third-period goals in a 3-1 win over the Roos at the Canton Pavilion.
SUNY Canton had beaten the Bulls 3-0 to capture the Blizzard in Buffalo tournament in December with three goals in the final stanza. They led 1-0 through two periods on Friday and outshot the Bulls 31-29.
Sophomore John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) connected for his 12th goal of the season with just 1:51 left in the first period off an assist from freshman defender JP Boucha (Warroad, Minn.). The Roos held a 14-8 shot advantage in the opening stanza and that slim lead would hold through two periods as senior Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) turned aside all 19 shots he faced through 40 minutes.
The Bulls finally broke through when Dan Krug scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at the 2:22 mark of the third period. John Fitzgerald then scored the game-winning goal at the 4:10 mark and Tim Benner added an insurance goal with 9:04 left in the game.
Merrow finished with 26 saves on 29 shots for the Roos who dipped to 7-1 in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League and 18-6 overall.
Rich Latona had 30 saves for the Bulls who improved to 9-4 in league play and 19-7 overall.
The two teams, who came into the game tied for second in the league, face off again on Saturday at 1:30 at the Pavilion. The Roos will also host Cortland State on Sunday at 2:30.
