Brian Christie and Brett Seney spotted Merrimack College a 2-0 second period lead and the Warriors held off a St. Lawrence third period comeback to complete a sweep of its opening weekend with a 3-1 win over the Saints Saturday night.

Merrimack, a 7-1 winner over Clarkson on Friday night, delighted a capacity homecoming crowd with its second straight win and handed the Saints, now 3-1-0 their first loss of the season.

"Merrimack was just what I expected them to be. They are a team that can frustrate you. They play real well positionally. Tonight we wanted the game to be easier than it really was and they play fast and just chip pucks in and make you work. For portions of the game I think they outworked us."

The Saints had a slight edge in an end-to-end first period, outshooting the Warriors 9-7, but SLU came up empty on a trio of power plays and Merrimack took control in the second period.

Christie opened the scoring with his first goal of the year right off a faceoff win by Justin Hussar in the Saint end. Hussar won the draw back to Christie and he gunned a shot over the glove of Kyle Hayton at 2:53 for the 1-0 lead. It went to 2-0 at 16:02 when defenseman Jonathan Lashyn sent Seney into the Saint end and Seney went hard to the net, putting the puck just under the crossbar for his first goal of the year.

The Saints battled back in the third period and cut the lead in half at 7:56 when Michael Ederer took a pass from Drew Smolcynski and snapped a wrist shot past Merrimack goalie Collin Delia with Nolan Gluchowski also assisting. The Saints pressed for the tying goal, but Chris LeBlanc iced the win for Merrimack when he got to a loose puck in the Saint end as a Saint defender was being held and scored from close range at 17:45 for the 3-1 lead.

"It wasn't until we were down 2-0 that we realized how hard we had to work," said Carvel."We came back and had some chances. We had a power play and didn't score and then we hurt ourselves on the comeback with a couple of untimely penalties. I give them a lot of credit, they were easily the best team we have seen."
