Hannah Merriam's second half goal led the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Vassar in a Liberty League contest on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. Today's win marked the first win over the Brewers for the Saints since 2013.

A game that proved evenly matched from the start remained scoreless in the first half despite the Saints holding a 6-1 shots on goal advantage and two close calls.

Katie Stames fired a shot which was tipped to the crossbar by Brewers' goalkeeper Fiona Walsh, and Katie Clemmer rang the post in the 39th minute of play adding another close call for the Saints.

Merriam picked up a long pass from Emily Wade and sped past two defenders for the breakaway. Merriam slipped a shot into the lower right corner past Walsh in the 53rd minute of play.

"Vassar is an incredibly well coached team with a dangerous attack," said head coach Franco Bari. "While they really put our back line on their heels, we held strong and worked collectively to preserve the shutout. On the attacking end I thought we produced multiple dangerous opportunities and Vassar's keeper made a few incredible saves. Our team fought hard today and I am very proud of this group."

Samantha Allen made a crucial save with just under five minutes to play off a shot from Vassar's Emily Longo to help hold the lead for the Scarlet and Brown.

Allen recorded four saves in goal for her fifth shutout of the season, while Walsh finished with 12 saves for Vassar. St. Lawrence outshot their opponent's 24-12 and finished with a 13-4 shots on goal advantage.

The Saints improved to 9-4 on the season and 4-2 in Liberty League play, while Vassar fell to 8-3-3 and 4-1-1. With the win, the Saints moved into third place in the conference standings.

St. Lawrence will travel to Saratoga Springs, New York to take on Skidmore on Saturday, Oct. 21st.
