CANTON -- Morgan Smith intercepted a Cortland defender's pass back to his own goalie and scored to give the nationally-ranked #20 St. Lawrence University Saints a 1-0 victory at Sandy MacAllaster Field in overtime.
The Saints, who improve to 1-1 on the season, outshot the Red Dragons 25-10 in the game with the golden goal coming in the 98th minute.
Meanwhile, Cortland falls to 2-0 despite an outstanding eight-save performance from goalkeeper Tim Beauvais.
St. Lawrence controlled the majority of the possession throughout the game but couldn't push a goal across until the overtime period.
Beauvais made numerous diving saves to keep his team in the game, while the St. Lawrence's Seyefe Brouk and Jeremiah Bunton each hit a crossbar in the game.
Cortland's best chance to score came in the second half as Chris Barbosa broke through the Saints' defense for a one-on-one with St. Lawrence's goalkeeper Aaron Costello.
Costello came up with a big diving save to keep the score tied 0-0.
He finished with three saves for his first shutout of the season.
With about 22 minutes remaining in regulation, St. Lawrence first-year Rob Brandell took a hard shot from outside the box that Beauvais tipped over the crossbar.
Then later with under 1:30 left in regulation, Brouk had another hard shot that Beauvais handled to force an overtime period.
