The St. Lawrence University softball team improved to 13-3 on the season with a sweep of Potsdam State in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Potsdam, NY. Highlighting the day were impressive pitching performances by junior Liz McGinley and rookie Kyle Plimpton. McGinley allowed only three hits in a dominating 5-1 victory in game one, while Plimpton established a new University record for strikeouts in a season as she fanned nine in the 9-4 win in game two.

Senior Chelsea Hanno led the Saints offensively as she was 4-for-7 on the day with two runs and an RBI. Junior Becky Allen was 3-for-7 with two runs and junior Lauren Weisbarth was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. First-year student Aisha O'Connor scored three runs and sophomore Caroline Kieltyka had two RBIs and a triple.

St. Lawrence manufactured its first runs of the opening game in the second inning when Weisbarth's double to left-center brought home McGinley and Hanno. O'Connor made it 3-0 later in the inning when she advanced home on Potsdam's attempt to catch sophomore Leslie Stratton stealing second.

The Saints added to their lead in the sixth inning when sophomore Cailyn Welsh ripped a double to the left field fence to bring home sophomore Khalshia White. Welsh then advanced to third on Hanno's single and scored on a wild pitch to put her team up 5-0.

Potsdam's unearned run came in the sixth inning when Sami Brown's double plated Kara Collins, who reached on an errant Saint throw.

McGinley, who held a no-hitter through five innings, improved to 6-1 on the season as she allowed only three hits and no earned runs, while striking out five.

St. Lawrence wasted no time in the nightcap, as Stratton, Allen and junior Chelsea Cavellier each capitalized on Potsdam pitching miscues to take a 3-0 lead.

Potsdam, however, responded in the same inning when Ashley Thayer doubled to center field, scoring two to bring her team to within one at 3-2.

The Saints used a five-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach for the Bears, as O'Connor, Allen, Kieltyka, Hanno and first-year student Brady Cooper each came around to score to give their team an 8-2 advantage

Potsdam put two more runs on the board in the sixth before St. Lawrence capped the scoring in the seventh when O'Connor crossed the plate on Cavellier's sacrifice fly.

Plimpton gave up seven hits and four earned runs in the effort, while striking out nine and walking three. The Buffalo, NY native brought her current strikeout total to 102, topping the program's record of 99 previously set by Colette Dafoe '01 in 2001.

The Saints will kick off a six-game home stint on Saturday as they take on Liberty League foe Rensselaer. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
