The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team won its 10th straight game with a victory over William Smith College, 76-63, in Friday's Liberty League contest in the Burkman Gymnasium. The Saints, led by sophomore Kara McDuffee's game-high 23 points and junior Kelly Legg's double-double, improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the league. The Herons were led by Chloe Hayter's 23 points but suffered the loss, falling to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
McDuffee added seven rebounds, six steals and five assists, while Legg tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. First-year student Amanda Roberts addedeight points and a career-high 14 assists, one shy of tying the program's record for assist in a game in 1986.
Both teams posted impressive shooting numbers in the first half, with William Smith shooting 15-of-28 (53.6) and St. Lawrence shooting 16-for-31 (51.6). However, the Saints made nine 3-pointers in the half, four of which came from McDuffee in the opening minutes. Meanwhile, Hayter was effective in the post for the Herons as she was 7-of-9 for 17 points in the opening stanza, helping the visitors outscore the home team 22-11 in the paint.
William Smith's Erin O'Brien made a layup at 5:35 to tie the game for the fourth and last time (31-31), as St. Lawrence went on a 12-6 run to close the half with a 43-37 lead.
The Saints continued the run into the second half, putting the game out of reach for the Herons with a 27-8 run in the opening minutes of the final half. After stretching their lead to as many as 22 points at 9:12 (67-45), St. Lawrence entered a scoreless drought that lasted until the 2:37 mark but continued its tough defense, holding William Smith to just eight points in that span. The Saints kept a double figure advantage the rest of the way to the 76-63 win.
St. Lawrence will host RIT in a Liberty League contest in the Burkman Gymnasium tomorrow, January 19th. Tip-off is at 2:00pm.
