Canton, NY – Freshman Kyle Matsumoto dished out assists on both SUNY Canton goals as the Roos dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting Fredonia on Saturday afternoon at the Roos House.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes as the hosts held an 11-7 shots on goal edge. With just 22 seconds left in the opening frame Eric Witzel (Ottawa, ON) was whistled for holding the stick of Jared Wynia in a breakaway situation resulting in a penalty shot. Roos goalie Spencer Landry (New Hartford, NY) came up huge stymying Wynia to keep the game scoreless after one.
SUNY Canton seized back the momentum as they started the final frame with a full two minute power play after Fredonia picked up a high sticking penalty as time expired in the second. Captain George Curry (Schaumburg, IL) capitalized 48 seconds into the third for his first goal of the season. Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY) fed Matsumoto at the point who ripped a shot toward net. Curry was out in front shielding Eiserman as he redirected the puck into the back of the net.
The Roos continued to put pressure on the Blue Devils down the stretch and owned a 10-5 shots on goal edge in the final 20 minutes. Head Coach Trevor Gilligan pulled net minder Landry with 26 seconds remaining but the hosts were unable to find the equalizer.
Landry stopped 28 shots between the pipes, while Eiserman made 29 saves for Fredonia. The Blue Devils went 1-for-2 with the extra skater in the contest, while the Roos were just 1-for-8 with the skater advantage.
The Roos return to action on Friday when they travel to take on Oswego State at 7:00 p.m.
