St. Lawrence sophomore Dustin Martin finished in 17th place overall on Friday in the giant slalom at the 2012 Dartmouth Carnival at the Dartmouth Ski Way, leading the men's alpine ski team to a season-best fourth place in the team standings.

Martin was in the top-15 after his first run of 56.25, but slipped to 17th overall with a combined time of 1:51.75. The Stowe, VT native picked up his fourth career top-20, and was joined in the top-30 by three teammates including senior Jeremy Lawless, rookie Loudon Fruth and sophomore Nick Scalia.

Lawless was 24th overall, followed by Fruth in 25th place to cap the Saints' scoring at 70.0 points, one point ahead of Colby College. Scalia, making his first start of the season in the team's line-up, was 29th overall.

Senior captain Matt Dodge (37th) and first-year Graham Scott (DNF) also competed in the GS for the Scarlet and Brown.

On the women's side, St. Lawrence was without junior standout Ashley-Kate Durham, who won last week's GS race at UVM. The Timmins, ON native was held out of Friday's women's GS due to illness, but will look to race in tomorrow's slalom.

Sophomore Caroline Barry was the top St. Lawrence finisher in the women's event with a combined time of 1:58.42, good for 24th overall. Senior Mackenzie Irwin (40th) and rookie Maria Hillenbrand (44th) capped the team's scoring at 36.0 points, landing the squad in 10th position.

First-year students Allison Visconti (DNF) and Kelly Appenzeller (DNQ) rounded out the team's GS line-up.

The University of Vermont swept the alpine races at Dartmouth on Friday, as the Catamounts claimed both team and individual titles. Kate Ryley led UVM to victory on the women's side, while the Catamounts took the top-4 spots in the men's race, led by individual champion Jonathan Nordbotten.

Both St. Lawrence alpine ski teams will be in action again tomorrow in the slalom on Day Two of the 2012 Dartmouth Carnival.
