Freshman wing Mike Marnell scored on a redirection in front 2:43 into overtime as St. Lawrence University staged a late rally to beat 13th-ranked Yale 3-2 in a ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena in Canton Friday night.

The Saints, who have now won three straight and four of their last five, knocked off a nationally ranked team for the second time in as many games as they came from 2-1 down to tie on Christian Horn's power play goal with 1:13 to go in regulation and then won for the first time in five overtime tries. SLU improves to 12-10-2 on the season and 8-4-0 in ECAC play while Yale had a three-game win streak of its own snapped and is 11-5-2, 6-4-1 in league play.

"I really like the way we played tonight," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "We continued the momentum we built last weekend and had good energy and an excellent level of competition. This was our first come from behind win, which is a good sign for a young team which is still growing and developing. We are playing our best hockey of the year right now."

St. Lawrence scored the lone goal of a fast-paced first period when junior wing Tommy Thompson picked up a rebound of a Pat Doherty shot and put it back past Yale goaltender Alex Lyon at 11:53.

The pace continued at a high level in the second period as the two teams put 13 shots on net each, and Yale scored the lone goal to tie it as Mike Doherty put his own rebound back past Saint rookie goalie Kyle Hayton for his seventh of the season at 7:20.

Yale took the lead after a Saint turnover as Matt Killian scored his fourth of the year from right in front in a scramble at 8:19 to give the Bulldogs the lead, but the Saints tied it on the power play when Horn took the puck from Thompson deep in his own end and snapped a shot from right along the goal line which caught the upper corner inside the far post for his third of the season at 18:47.

The Saints came out strong in the overtime and got the game winner when junior center Brian Ward sent a shot toward net that Marnell redirected, the puck going past Lyon after hitting a Yale defender near the post.

Hayton finished with 28 saves for the Saints including a pair of big shorthanded stops in the third period while Lyon had 29 stops for Yale.

"That was a great character win for us," Carvel added. "We played a real good game against a very good team. We made a couple of turnovers which contributed to their offense, but we were able to find a way to win."
