Sophomore wing Mike Marnell scored two goals in his second game back in the lineup after an ankle injury and sophomore goalie Kyle Hayton made 14 of his 29 saves in the third period as 17th-ranked St. Lawrence University held off 15th-ranked Miami University 5-3 for a split of their weekend series at Appleton Arena.

The Saints, now 4-2-0, split with the RedHawks (3-2-1) for the second straight year and snapped Miami's three-game win streak which included a 1-0 win in theMike Marnell celebrates his first goal of the year against Miami series opener Friday night. SLU will play at Penn State in their final non-league set before the start of ECAC play in games Thursday and Friday.

Marnell, who missed the first four games of the season after sustaining an ankle injury in an exhibition win over Carleton, helped ignite a Saint offense which was kept in check by Miami in Friday's loss.

"That was a great sixty minute effort," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "I thought our guys responded real well after having a tough game last night where offense was hard to come by. We shot the puck and when you shoot pucks at the net good things happen. But it was all based on the fact that we competed real hard."

The Saints scored the only goal of the first period when freshman Jacob Pritchard's shot toward net bounced off the shin of a Miami defender and past goalie Ryan McKay for Pritchard's first collegiate goal at 6:21. Miami came back to tie it midway through the second period as Jack Roslovic's shot was blocked by a Saint defender, but the puck sat on the ice and defenseman Chris Joyaux one-timed a blast past Hayton for his second goal of the year at 10:24.

SLU came right back with a pair of goals within 28 seconds to take a 3-1 lead. Sean McGovern beat McKay with a wrist shot from just two strides inside the blue line, firing to the far post for his first of the year at 15:20 and Marnell scored his first of the night on a backhand in a scramble in front from Brian Ward at 15:48.

The Saints took a 5-1 lead 5:03 into the third period when senior Tommy Thompson picked up a rebound on a save on a Joe Sullivan shot and tucked it back into the net, but Miami made it interesting when defenseman Matthew Caito scored his first of the year on a power play as he pinched in and scored from in close at 9:49 and Alex Gacek scored from his knees at 10:37 to make it a 4-3 game.

Marnell iced the win for the Saints when he took the puck away at the defensive blue line, battled through a Miami check and hit the empty net for his second of the night with 33 seconds to go in regulation.

Miami outshot the Saints 32-31 for the game and 16-7 in the third period with the help of a pair of power plays. McKay finished with 26 saves for the RedHawks.

"I don't think that they wanted to compete at the level we competed tonight and other than getting a couple of chances to get back into it in the third that they took advantage of to make it close, but I was real proud of our guys tonight. I think we showed what we are capable of against a good team and I thought we out-willed them for most of the night."
