Sophomore wing Kennedy Marchment scored as she was being pulled to the ice with 1:10 to go in the second period and first-year goaltender Sonjia Shelly made it stand up with a 25-save night as St. Lawrence beat nationally 10th-ranked Princeton 3-2 in a ECAC Women's Hockey game at Appleton Arena Friday night.

Marchment took a pass from Amanda Boulier at the bottom of the left faceoff circle, fought off a hook and kept skating toward the goal, wristing a shot between the near post and Princeton goalie Kimberly Newell with the teams skating four-on-four to score the game-winning goal. The goal was her team leading sixth of the year and her first game-winner of the season as the Saints improve to 7-6-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the ECAC heading into a Saturday afternoon game against Quinnipiac.

SLU won its third straight game overall and its league home opener while Princeton, which opened its season with four straight wins, fell to 1-2-1 in its last four and is now 5-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in league play.

"It was a back and forth game that we were able to make one more play than Princeton," said Saint coach Chris Wells following the victory. "Both teams had fantastic chances and played hard. It seemed like posts were hit about six times tonight…it was an entertaining game for the fans and we were fortunate to get the two points."

The first period was a wide open one as the Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Tigers battled back to tie with two goals in a span of 33 seconds.

Sophomore defender Amanda McClure opened the scoring for the Saints as she took a shot from the center slot and it found its way through traffic and past Newell just 1:32 into the game. It was the second of the season for McClure. The Saints took a 2-0 lead at 10:49 when rookie Justine Reyes scored her third of the season, cutting in front and beating Newell with a shot under the crossbar as Brooke Webster assisted on the play.

Princeton came right back, scoring on its first power play opportunity and first power play shot of the game as Cassidy Tucker snapped her third of the season past Shelly at 12:34 and the Tigers tied it at 13:07 when Carlie Lund scored her fifth of the season on a quick rush up ice and a shot from in tight.

The Saints almost took a lead just seconds into the second period when defender Amanda Boulier sent a long shot in on net which Newell fumbled, but managed to get under control before it could cross the goal line.

Newell finished with 21 saves for Princeton while Shelly had 25 for the Saints.
