Canton, NY – Edward Malinoski, Jr. (Evans Mills, NY) scored his team-leading seventh goal in the fourth minute and the early score held up as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory against visiting Castleton on Sunday afternoon.

SUNY Canton (5-9-1) got on the board just 3:48 into the contest. Marc Ramirez (La Puente, CA) delivered a ball in to the box, but Castleton keeper Aaron Parker was unable to clear the ball as it went right to Malinoski (Evans Mills, NY) who finished into the open net. The Roos took a 1-0 lead into the half holding a slight 2-1 edge in shots on goal.

The hosts had another quality chance in the second half when Erdous Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) nearly finished off a header in the 63rd minute but Parker made the save for the Spartans. SUNY Canton looked to add an insurance goal with 18 minutes remaining on a beautiful build up but were whistled for offside.

With nine minutes remaining Cameron Rossi-Crete tested Mouhammed Thiam (New York, NY) with a high shot from long distance but he was up to the task making the stop. Thiam came up huge with just 14 seconds remaining as he made a great diving save to his right deflecting a shot from Josh Mathews off the crossbar to preserve the win.

Thiam stopped all four shots he faced in the game to improve to 5-3 on the season, while Parker made a pair of stops for the Spartans (4-8-2).

The Roos honored their lone senior Andrew Barber (Lansing, NY) prior to today's match. The men's soccer team closes out the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday when it hosts Utica College at 6 p.m.
