Lopata takes 10th in 200 freestyle for CU swimmers on Day Two at UNYSCSA

Ithaca, NY - Freshman Gavin Lopata took 10th place in the 200 freestyle to highlight the five individual performers from the Clarkson University Swim team who competed in the evening finals on day two of the UNYSCSA Championships hosted by Ithaca College.

Thursday evening's events began with the Golden Knights' men taking 11th in the 200 freestyle relay as Lopata, Connor Maloney, Jon Ketcham and Sam Zwierzchowski combined for an 11th place finish in 1:30.24. Clarkson's women took 14th in the same relay as Tiffany Catano, Kendal Lazarus, Samantha Denning and Sarah Mykins finished the race in 1:50.24.

Senior Nick Short placed 15th in the preliminaries earlier in the day for his performance in the 400 individual medley, but he dropped a spot in the 'B' finals, finishing with an evening time of 4:26.19. Garry Dorn was six spots short of joining Short in the evening events, taking 30th in the 400 IM. Brooke Atkinson was three spots higher for the Knights, coming in 27th of the preliminaries in 5:11.31.

Senior Sam Zwierzchowski came in 24th in the preliminaries in the morning, but jumped two spots in the 'C' finals at night, taking 22nd with a time of 56.35 seconds in the 100 butterfly. He was also nearly joined by Andrew Woythal, who came in 28th in the preliminaries, and Bakari Smith, who took 38th. Freshman Lauren Grasberger tied for 18th in the preliminaries in 1:01.60, and knocked off nearly a second in the 'B' finals but actually dropped to 19th in the 100 butterfly. Brooke Atkinson (33rd) and Rachel Barclay (41st) also competed in the 100 fly.

The best performance of the day for the Knights came in the 200 freestyle as both Lopata and Chris Bay competed in the finals. Lopata took 10th with a time of 1:46.10, matching his placement from the preliminaries, while Bay picked up three spots from his earlier run to finish 20th in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.20. Connor Koehler (47), Mike Palozzi (54) and John Cain (58) finished in the latter half of the competitors of the 200 free. Similarly, Kendal Lazarus (56), Samantha Denning (57) and Billie Hens (62) also finished short of the finals for the women in the 200 freestyle. Both Joanne Bechaz and Isabel Dengos also competed in the 1-meter dive and finished 22nd and 25th, respectively, in the prelims.

Thursday night finished with the 400 medley relay, as the Golden Knights' men finished in 10th as the veteran group of Nick Short, Jon Ketcham, Chris Bankaitis and Chris Bay combined for a time of 3:35.62. The women's 400 medley relay took 11th with Sarah Halstead, Kayla Weckesser, Lauren Grasberger and Tiffany Catano compiling a time of 4:12.38.
