Liggio leads Roos hockey past Drexel

On a night where he and fellow captain Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) were honored for their recent entry into the 100-point club, Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) tallied two goals and one assist to lead the Roos to their seventh straight win over Drexel University Friday.

Freshman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) opened the scoring at 3:42 of the first period when he sent a wrist-shot from the right hash-marks just under the crossbar past Drexel goaltender Daniel Pyne. Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) assisted on the goal.

Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) extended the Roos lead to 2-0 on an odd-man rush when he buried a cross-crease pass from Lafferty at 16:50. Frizell set up the play, hitting Lafferty with a lead pass to send him on the break, earning his second assist of the night.

Senior Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) put the Roos up 3-0 three minutes and 13 seconds into the second period when he capitalized on an one-on-one opportunity, lifting the puck glove-side past Pyne. Just over a minute later, freshman Sean Gallagher (Sandwich, Mass.) sent a wrist-shot through traffic past Pyne on the stick-side to extend the lead to 4-0 at 4:24. Liggio and Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.) assisted on the play.

The Dragons answered back when freshman William Bascou capitalized on a Roos giveaway in front of goaltender Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) at 15:56.

To open the third period, the Roos honored Camp and Liggio for their efforts on the ice, as both entered the school’s 100-point club two weekends ago. Liggio earned his 100th point on October 8th versus Binghampton University, while Camp earned his on October 9th in a Roos victory over the University of Scranton. Liggio responded to the honor when he buried his first goal of the night, sending a rebound from an Austin Root shot into a wide open net on the left side past Pyne at 4:11 of the third period.

The Dragons tallied their second of the night, cutting the Roos lead to three goals, when Dylan Dignan found the puck in a scramble and put a rebound past Barr at 14:25.

But the Roos regained their four-goal cushion when Thomas Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) skated in two-on-one against Pyne and a Dragon’s defender. Pyne saved Giczewski’s initial shot, but Freeman jumped on the rebound for the Roos sixth goal at 15:49.

Liggio and Camp closed out the scoring for the Roos at 19:21 when Camp sent a pass through the offensive zone to a wide open Liggio who put a shot past Pyne high blocker.

Barr made ten saved in the win for the Roos, his third of the season. Sophomore Michael Pittman (Amarillo, Texas) logged just over 10 minutes in net, making one save, while Barr dealt with equipment problems. Pyne made 29 saves for the Dragons.

The teams face off again Saturday, with the puck set to drop at 1:30 p.m.
