Late run by Lady Knights come up short at RIT

Rochester, NY - Freshman Raeanne Clabeaux (New Woodstock, NY) nearly posted a triple-double in only her fourth collegiate game, but the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team came up on the short end of a 62-53 decision against Liberty League foe RIT Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell below .500 with the loss, dropping to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League. The Tigers evened their conference record at 2-2 and improved to 6-7 overall. Clarkson will return home on Tuesday when it faces Skidmore College.

The first half began with the Golden Knights struggling to find a groove offensively, committing eight turnovers and missing five shots in the first five-plus minutes. Trailing 14-0, a pair of free throws from Taliah Pounds (Watervliet, NY) finally got the Knights going, and a pair of 3-pointers from Marissa Pelosi (Medfield, MA) helped spark a 13-1 run by the Knights over the course of three minutes. After a scoreless stretch from both teams, Pelosi made a basket to make the score 19-15 in favor of the Tigers, but RIT ran off eight straight points over a two-minute span to give the hosts a 12-point edge. Clarkson clawed back to within eight points at the break, 31-23.

With seven straight points to start the second half, RIT enjoyed its biggest lead of the game at 18:10, 38-23, but the next six minutes belonged to Clarkson as again the Knights fought back to within four. Down by just a basket on two separate occasions in the second half, Clarkson appeared ready to move ahead for the first time in the contest, but a 10-0 run late in the second half lifted RIT to a 56-44 edge with under four minutes to go. Once again, Clarkson rallied back and pulled to within five in the final minute after a Leighann Tomita (Cerritos, CA) jumper, but the Tigers capably hit their free throws to hold off the charge.

Clabeaux came within two steals of recording a triple-double, scoring 11 points with 11 rebounds and eight steals while also dishing out four assists. Pelosi and Pounds also hit for 11 points in the contest for Clarkson.

For RIT, Courtney Tennant was a difficult match up on the block for Clarkson, recording 18 points, including a 10-for-12 performance from the free throw line, and 15 rebounds. Anne Wapshare produced 14 points and seven rebounds, and Kayla Wheeler added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers.
