Late run gives Saints women’s basketball weekend sweep

Caroline Dalton scored 16 points and Ellie Gonyeau added 14 for the St. Lawrence University Women's Basketball team as the Saints scored eight of the last 10 points of the game to post a 72-65 victory over Bard College Saturday afternoon in a Liberty League contest at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.

 Dalton connected on four free throws in the final minutes and Gonyeau added two more in the stretch run for the Saints (8-2 overall, 2-0 Liberty League).

 Bard (5-8, 0-4) pulled to within four points at 64-60 with 3:45 left to play in the fourth quarter before Dalton made four consecutive free throws and after Gonyeau blocked a shot Kaelyn Kohlasch made a layup with an assist from Gonyeau to give St. Lawrence a 72-60 lead.

 Bard scored 20 seconds later but Kohlasch sealed the win with a steal with 40 seconds remaining.

 The Raptors opened the game with a quick lead and held an eight-point advantage in the first five minutes of action before a 3-pointer by Sarah Thomas trimmed the lead back to a point in the closing minute of the first quarter.

 Sty. Lawrence controlled the second quarter and built a lead of nine points near the end of the period on a driving layup by Lauren Quattrocchi and the Saints took a 37-28 lead into the halftime intermission.

The St. Lawrence lead grew to as much as 14 points in the third quarter as Dalton connected on a 3-pointer with 6:06 left in the third to give the Saints a 48-34 advantage. Gonyeau hit a late layup to give St. Lawrence a 58-45 lead after 30 minutes of action.

Bard used a couple small runs in the final quarter to trim the lead before coming to within four points with 3:45 left on the clock before Dalton and Gonyeau connected on their free throws down the stretch.

Dalton led the way for St. Lawrence with 16 points including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Gonyeau added 14 points and was 4-for-4 from the line while Thomas notched a career-high eight points and Jenny Scudder added seven points for the Saints. Scudder, Kohlasch, Cara Waterson and Dalton all had five rebounds each and Kohlasch led the way with five assists.

The Saints will visit Clarkson Tuesday night in a Liberty League matchup starting at 6 pm.
