Late run downs Saints' men’s basketball at RPI

Kyle Kobis scored 14 points including a pair of free throws with 3:17 left to play giving the St. Lawrence University Men's Basketball team a 61-59 lead but RPI scored the final 13 points in the game for a 72-61 victory in a Liberty League contest Friday night at the East Campus Gym in Troy.

Kobis and Willie Zachery led the Saints (7-7 overall, 3-3 Liberty League) with 14 points each but the Engineers (8-7, 2-4) shot nearly 55% from the field for the night limited St. Lawrence to 37% (23-for-62) shooting from the field.

RPI was leading 37-32 at the halftime intermission and scored the first points of the second half.

St. Lawrence rallied as Dom DeRegis nailed a 3-pointer and Kaleb Faison connected on a layup followed by a Chris Miner layup tying the game at 46-46 with 13:22 left.

Another Faison layup gave the Saints a lead but RPI hit a 3-pointer to regain the lead.

Zachery hit consecutive baskets including a 3-pointer to give the Saints another lead with 9:29 remaining and the lead went back and forth over the next several minutes. Two more free throws by Zachery made the score 59-58 in favor of St. Lawrence.

Two minutes later, Kobis hit his two free throws for the final points of the night for the Saints.

Kobis and Zachery tied for the team lead in scoring with 14 each while Riley Naclerio scored seven points and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

The Saints continue the four-game road swing with a 4 pm game Saturday at Union before a trip to Bard and Vassar next weekend.
