RIT's Anthony Lewis scored the game-winner with 25 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 75-72 win over the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team in Liberty League play Friday evening in Burkman Gymnasium.
Junior Ben Crawford led the Saints with 26 points and a season-high 20 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season, while first-year Brandon Arnold and Dom DeRegis added 17 and 13 points, respectively, to round out the top-three scorers for the Saints. DeRegis added a season-high four steals, while Pierre Coffy added nine points and seven rebounds.
A hard-fought battle from the start, both teams nearly battled point-for-point through the first five minutes of play. Charles Okehie gave the Tigers a four-point advantage with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half. DeRegis countered with a 3-pointer closing that gap to one just second later and went on to shoot 3-for-6 from the arc.
After a series of three ties the Tigers carried a 40-32 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers jumped out to an 11-point lead early in the second half when Troy Pierre-Louis netted a 3-pointer out of the gate. St. Lawrence rallied with a 16-5 run, tying the score at 48 on a layup by Crawford at the 13:27 mark of the final frame.
After a scoreless six minutes for RIT the Tigers fell behind 67-64 on a pair of free throws by Crawford, which ended a 10-point run for St. Lawrence.
Arnold hit another 3-pointer giving the Saints a 70-67 lead with 2:18 left to play. Will Atkinson responded with a 3-pointer of his own, tying the score at 70. With 25 seconds left, Lewis got his own rebound off a missed 3-pointer and hit a jumper with 25 seconds to play to give the Tigers a 74-72 lead. Lewis hit his final free throw to close the game.
RIT was led by Lewis with 19 points and six rebounds, while Pierre-Louis and Jaymee Rosser each netted 15 points. Lewis and Robert Aguilera posted a team-high six rebounds each. Aguilera added five assists, while Pierre-Louis posted three steals for the Tigers.
With the loss, the Saints fell to 3-12 on the season and 1-7 in conference play, while RIT improved to 7-8 and 5-3.
