Rob Brandell converted a penalty kick with 2:38 left to play in the second half to lead the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over SUNY Oswego Friday afternoon on Sandy MacAllister Field in Canton.

Charleton Kelly took a pass in the box but was hauled down by a pair of Laker defenders, setting up the penalty kick for the Saints.

Brandell kicked the ball into the right side of the net for the only goal of the game.

Oswego had a late chance off a corner kick with less than a minute to play. The kick sailed to the far side of the box and was headed back toward the middle where Paul Kwoyelo sent a one-timer toward the Saints' goal. Jackson Schierbeek made a diving stop but could not control the rebound. Zack Koons, who had just been inserted into the game as a substitution, fired a shot that sailed over the cross bar and the clock ran out shortly after the ensuing goal kick.

The shots were nearly even for the game with Oswego holding a slim 11-10 advantage but the shots on goal were even at 6-6.

Schierbeek finished with six saves improving his record to 3-0 and earning his first career shutout.

The Saints return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, facing No. 22 SUNY Cortland in a battle of unbeaten teams as the Red Dragons enter with a 5-0-0 record.
