Late goal drops Saints women’s lacrosse in heartbreaking loss

Kayla Schmalz scored her third goal of the game with 34 seconds left to tie the game at 10-10 but Skidmore answered with a goal 13 seconds later to take an 11-10 victory Friday afternoon in a Liberty League game in Saratoga Springs.

Skidmore (7-6 overall, 4-2 Liberty League) opened the game with the first two goals of the contest to take an early lead in the first seven minutes of action.

Schmalz put the Saints (8-7, 4-3) on the board at the 20:36 mark and Abigail Owens tied the game a minute later and the teams traded goals for the next 15 minutes. Chloe Knapp and Schmalz scored for St. Lawrence and the game was tied at 4-4 with 4:18 left in the opening half.

The Thoroughbreds scored the next three goals to take a 7-3 lead before Alexandra LaMotte scored with one second remaining in the half.

In the second half, the Saints scored three of the first four goals to take a 9-8 lead. Kara Hurley scored twice while LaMotte and Olivia Slade scored single goals as the Saints forged ahead.

St. Lawrence held the lead for the next six minutes before Skidmore tied the score at 9-9 with just less than eight minutes remaining.

The score remained tied until the final minute of play.

The Thoroughbreds took a 10-9 lead at the 48-second mark and Schmalz responded with the tying goal 14 seconds later before Skidmore scored the game-winner.

Schmalz led the Saints with three points on her three goals while Hurley, Knapp and LaMotte added two points each as Hurley and LaMotte scored twice and Knapp added a goal and an assist.

Schmalz also led the Saints with four ground balls and two caused turnovers while LaMotte picked up a team-high four draw controls.

The Saints continue the Liberty League weekend with a 2 pm game Saturday at RPI.
