Late free throws push Union past Clarkson women's basketball team

Potsdam, NY – Making seven free throws in the final minute and a half, Union College turned a three-point lead into a 10-point advantage, and held off the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball, 57-47, in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen improved to 9-4 and 4-1 in conference games. Clarkson will look to get on the winning side next weekend when it visits Hamilton and William Smith.

Neither team came out with much offensive gusto, as the Dutchwomen struggled to make just one shot in their first 11 attempts and Clarkson made just one of its first nine shots. The two teams also combined for eight turnovers before Union took a timeout to get things together. Fortunately for both teams, the break helped lift them out of their respective doldrums. Over the final 12 minutes, the two squads combined for 44 points, a total more expected than the five produced in the opening eight. The Dutchwomen closed out the half with a four-point edge, 24-20.

Union pushed its lead to seven (31-24), before the Golden Knights went on an 8-0 run to briefly take a one-point advantage early in the second half, but it would be the only lead that Clarkson would take as the Dutchwomen quickly responded to reclaim their advantage. Trailing by three points late (50-47), Union senior forward Lauren McCormick nailed four free throws with just over a minute remaining, allowing the Dutchwomen to hang on for the victory.

McCormick was the only player to reach double figures, pushing herself to 14 points in the waning seconds. She also added in 14 rebounds for the Dutchwomen. Clarkson junior Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) came off the bench to score nine points, grab eight rebounds, and make three steals. Senior Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, NY) also added eight points and seven rebounds as a reserve.
