Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game but a strong start to the second half carried visiting Hartwick College to a 13-11 win on Wednesday.
Both teams' offenses started off scoring at a frantic rat averaging a goal a minute tied at 5-5 10 minutes in. Hartwick took a slim, 8-7 lead into intermission. Allison Auger, Devin Kelly and Logan Bush all had two points each in the opening half, while Ashley Werner led the Hawks with five goals and one assist.
Hartwick (4-3) scored five straight goals out of halftime to take a 13-7 lead before the Roos responded with four consecutive scores including two from Molly Denny to get within 13-11 with 6:06 to play. The Hawks were able to close out the win late, 13-11.
Denny paced the Roos with three goals, while Auger and Nutter added two each. Bush chipped in a goal and two assists. Amanda Woods recorded a game-high nine ground balls and added four caused turnovers. Mia Jermano tallied a team-best five caused turnovers and Bush added four caused turnovers, while Carin Sherwood and Kelly added four draw controls each.
Nicole Piskorowski made one save for the Roos (3-4), while Jennifer Paszko turned aside five shots in the first half and Carleigh Tarala stopped eight shots after halftime.
The women's lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday when it hosts SUNY Poly on Saturday at 10 a.m.
