Lasecki drives in six and Kinney shuts door in sweep of Rochester

Rochester, NY - Sophomore first baseman Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT) drove in three runs in each game and junior David Kinney (Mexico, NY) drove in the winning run while recording the final five outs of game two as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Rochester 11-5 and 8-7 Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.

The Golden Knights won their fourth straight game to improve to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League, while Rochester dropped to 5-9 and 1-3. The two teams will meet again in a doubleheader on Sunday.

In game one, Clarkson picked up a pair of runs in the top of the second with a two-out rally as Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) doubled home Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) and Sam Grainger (Bedford, MA) plated Russell with a single to center. Rochester scored two unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score 2-2.

In the fifth inning, Clarkson put the game away with a six-run spurt. Again with two outs, Kinney hit a high flyball that cleared the left-center fence for a two-run homer. Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) followed with a single and came around on a dropped third strike, which proved to be a big mistake for Rochester, as Pete Lasecki followed with a two-strike, three-run homer to put Clarkson up 8-2. Three more came around in the seventh inning as Russell plated two on a two-out double and then raced home on a wild pitch. Rochester picked up three runs in the bottom of the inning as Clarkson starter David Goerold (Clifton Park, NY) held on to complete the victory.

The second game saw Clarkson score runs in each of the first four innings. Coleman homered in the first while Lasecki and Kyle Van Vleet (Latham, NY) each drove in a run in the second. Lasecki doubled in two more in the third to give Clarkson a 5-0 lead and it appeared as if the Knights would run away with the contest. However, the Yellowjackets plated four in the bottom of the third when Steve Just hit a bases loaded home run to cut Clarkson's advantage to one.

Clarkson quickly responded with a run in the top of the fourth as David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) plated Van Vleet with a groundout. The Knights picked up another run in the sixth when Coleman drove home Kinney after he had doubled.

Rochester stormed back to tie the game 7-7 by scoring one in the bottom of the sixth inning and then picking up two more in the seventh. Just homered to right field, a solo shot, and Alex Parker doubled in Jon Menke to knot up the score. Fortunately, Clarkson responded with a run in the eighth inning. Wixted tripled to right and trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Kinney.

Kinney did a lot more than simply drive in the winning run in the second game. With just one out and the bases loaded, Kinney came off the corner to shut down the Rochester offense, striking out the first batter he faced and then inducing a fly out. In the bottom of the ninth he added another strikeout and forced a pair of groundballs to end the game.

For the day, Coleman went 4-for-8 with a home run and a pair of steals, while Lasecki went 4-for-9 with three doubles, a homer, three runs scored and six driven in. Lenney went 3-for-7, but scored five runs.
