Laroche and Chambers carry Roos women’s basketball to first win

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team jumped out to an early double digit lead and never trailed as they earned a 56-35 win against D'Youville College on Saturday in the Kevin Fee/Roos Classic.

The win is the first with the Roos for first year Head Coach Josh Suttles.

The Roos (1-1) jumped out to a 12-0 that included seven points from Antanasia Chambers as they led 21-3, their largest lead of the first half, with 1:41 remaining in the opening quarter. Canton would take a commanding 32-15 lead into intermission.

The hosts outscored the Spartans (0-3) 14-11 in the third quarter to open up a 20 point lead heading to the fourth. The Roos would take their largest lead of the game at 25 (51-26) following a Tatiana Laroche old-fashioned three-point play with 8:16 remaining as they cruised to the victory.

Chambers led all players with 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Laroche added 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Randi Conway and Billie Rivenburgh posted six points apiece for the Roos.

Magan Magree, DeDrice Howard and Sara Field finished with seven points apiece for D'Youville.

Canton shot 42 percent from the field and 50 percent from long distance, while the Spartans hit on just 16 and 14 percent of its attempts, respectively. The Roos held the advantage in rebounding (46-40), points off turnovers (20-15) and points in the paint (20-14).

The women's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Clarkson University at 5 p.m.
