OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-12, 1-5 SUNYAC) built a 40-37 lead at the half, but Oswego State (9-4, 2-4) was red hot in the second half en route to an 81-72 victory. Freshman guard Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) led the Bears with 18 points. Senior guard Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) matched a career-high with 14 points and freshman forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) added 13. Brian Sortino had a contest-best 30 points to lead the Lakers and Alex Rawa added 17.
Oswego opened the game on a 13-4 run over the first 3:17 capped by a Rawa 3-pointer. A Langley three followed by a Kane jumper got the Bears back within 13-9, but the Lakers countered with another run. Demetrius Mitchell hit a three for the exclamation point on a 13-5 Oswego run to put the Lakers up 26-14 at 9:24. Potsdam caught fire over the rest of the half, closing it out on a 26-11 stretch. Lamerson scored 10 of his points during the run.
Senior guard Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) sank a 3-pointer 41 seconds into the second half to give Potsdam its largest lead of the game at 43-39. Brian Sortino quickly erased the lead with a with two buckets of his own. The teams alternated the lead and buckets over the next several minutes, until Kyle Covley hit a 3-pointer to give Oswego a 49-47 advantage. The Lakers wouldn't trail again. Oswego's edge ranged between one and five points until another Rawa three made it 68-62 with 5:34 to go. Langley hit two free throws to get the Bears to within 70-66 at 3:05. Sortino again went on a personal 5-0 run to make it 75-66. Langley hit a jumper with 41 seconds left to get Potsdam within 79-72. Sortino then closed the scoring with two final free throws.
Oswego hit 47.5-percent of its shots, while the Bears knocked down 41.4. The Lakers also outrebounded Potsdam 41-30.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Plattsburgh at 7:30 p.m.
