Lakers’ fast start downs Bears women's lax, McClusky closes in on 200

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Oswego State (10-3, 5-2 SUNYAC) used an early run to pull away for a 19-8 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (7-7-, 3-4) on Tuesday afternoon. Senior midfielder Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) led the Bears with a goal and three assists. She is now just five points shy of 200 for her career. Junior attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had three goals on the afternoon for Potsdam.

Lapinski got the Bears on the board first just 3:04 into the contest, but Oswego answered with eight in a row. Senior midfielder Esther Gabriel (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), junior midfielder Kelsey Henderson (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) and freshman attack Teresa Shattuck (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) each scored twice for the Lakers during the stretch. The team's split the final six goals of the half and Oswego led 11-4. McClusky got Potsdam's second goal at 15:31. She then set up sophomore attack Murphy Newman's (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) 51st goal of the season at 11:50. With just two seconds remaining in the half, junior midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) got the Bears' fourth tally.

After two more Laker goals, Newman struck at 25:12 and McClusky fed senior midfielder Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) just 32 seconds later. Newman's goal gave her 99 points for her career (83g, 16a) and moved her into a tie for ninth place on the all-time scoring list with Mary English '01. Two more Oswego goals extended the lead to 18-7 with 7:21 to play. Lapinski got the Bears' finale goal at 6:37 and Teresa Shattuck set up her sister, senior attack Erannan Shattuck (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes), to close the scoring at 19-8 with 3:05 left.

Bears junior goalie Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) made seven saves and allowed 16 goals in the first 47:31. Freshman Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) allowed three goals and made three saves in the last 12:29. Lakers sophomore goalie Angela Ponto (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) made eight saves for the win.

Teresa Shattuck had a game-high nine points on two goals and seven assists, while Erannan finished with three goals and two assists. Gabriel had a contest-best five goals to go with an assist for six points. McCabe had a game-high five draw controls to move her into fifth place on Potsdam's all-time list with 100.

The Bears host SUNY Fredonia on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. for Senior Day. A win over the Blue Devils would give them their first ever playoff berth.
