OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (9-16, 2-6 SUNYAC) used strong pitching and power to take both ends of a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-16, 2-6) on Friday afternoon. The Lakers came from behind in game one to win 3-2 and held off the Bears 3-1 in game two.

In the opener, the Lakers got on the board in the bottom of the first. Erin Sweeney reached on a one out walk and came around to score on a triple by Alexis Nasca. Potsdam tied the game in the top of the second. Senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) led off with a walk. She was bunted to second by fellow senior captain Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and moved to third on a ground out by senior third baseman Samantha Cohn (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello). Marsman then came in to score on an illegal pitch by Oswego hurler Brittney Sears.

The Bears loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third, but weren't able to capitalize. Potsdam sophomore pitcher Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) worked around an error and a walk to pitch a scoreless bottom of the third.

Lerman hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth to give the Bears their first lead of the contest. Ashley Lyman countered with a two-run shot in the bottom half to put the Lakers back in front 3-2 after six. Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) reached second on an error to start the top of the seventh, but Potsdam was unable to bring her in to tie the game.

Hubinsky allowed a run on a hit and two walks in the first three innings. Freshman Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) fell to 1-4 after allowing one earned run on three hits in the final three innings. Sears improved to 5-6 after going the distance for Oswego. She allowed two runs on five hits and five walks, while striking out eight.

Senior left fielder Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was 2-for-2 with a double and Lerman was 1-for-1 with a walk. Cohn and sophomore designated hitter Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) also had hits for Potsdam.

Nasca started game two on the mound for the Lakers. She stranded two Bears in the top of the first and then homered in the bottom of the second to make it 1-0. Nasca got out of a first and third jam in the top of the third and doubled in two more in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-0. Potsdam got two more baserunners on in the top of the fourth, but again was frustrated by Nasca. The Bears stranded two more in the top of the fourth. Potsdam finally got to Nasca in the top of the sixth. Cohn hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored senior pinch runner Rachel Grefke (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) and closed the gap to 3-1. Relief pitcher Alexandria Connelly thwarted Potsdam's hope of a comeback by retiring the side in order in the top of the seventh.

Nasca (4-2) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out four in 5.1 innings pitched. Connelly picked up her second save, pitching a perfect 1.2 innings. Bears sophomore pitcher Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) (4-5) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks. McCauley had another strong relief outing for Potsdam. She blanked Oswego on a hit and a walk over the last 3.1 innings. Marsman was 2-for-3 in the finale.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they head to Cortland for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
