The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team held off a second-half comeback attempt by Liberty League opponent Vassar College to pick up a 67-60 victory in Poughkeepsie, NY on Friday night.
Four Saints reached double-figures in scoring as St. Lawrence extended its current win-streak to ten games and improved to 13-4 and a perfect 9-0 in the league. Vassar fell to 9-7 with a 3-4 mark in Liberty League play.
"Tonight was a great team effort with many contributions from all across the roster," said St. Lawrence head coach Dan Roiger. "Our guards really did a nice job of defending and our posts worked hard to get good shots and finish hard. Erica Spera and Cassie St. Hilaire, in particular, did a super job tonight, especially in the second half."
Sophomore forward Kelly Legg led had a team-high 14 points, while St. Hilaire, a sophomore guard, recorded 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Iris Santoni recorded 12 points, eight of which came in the last two minutes of play, and was 8-for-8 from the free throw line, while senior co-captain Katie Edgerton had 11 points and four rebounds. Rookie guards Kara McDuffee and Allison Cady combined for 16 points and four rebounds. Spera, a junior forward, contributed a team-high six assists, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
After St. Lawrence took an 11-point lead, 43-32, on an old-fashioned 3-point play by St. Hilaire five minutes into the second half, Vassar fought back to take a 48-47 lead following a jumper by sophomore forward Hannah Senftleber off her own missed shot. The Saints, however, answered at the 8:19 mark with a layup by Legg and maintained their lead en route to a 67-60 victory.
A reverse layup by Brewer forward Natalie Allen with 3:07 to play brought the home team within 56-53, but two free throws by Edgerton and a layup from Santoni gave the Saints a 60-53 lead with 1:26 remaining. Vassar was forced to foul and sent Santoni to the line three times in the last :30 seconds where she sank all six free throws to help her team seal the victory.
The Saints led the entire first half, leading by as many as eight points (21-13) at the midway point. Vassar tied the half 27-27 after a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Matsuoka, but St. Lawrence was able to take a 29-28 intermission lead in a half that was tied four times. St. Lawrence finished shooting 43% from the floor while Vassar could manage only 36%. The Brewers owned a 38-36 advantage in rebounds, including 17 offensive boards.
St. Lawrence will play Bard College tomorrow afternoon in a Liberty League matchup scheduled for 2:00pm.
